Session 3: Sequencing to tell the story

Starter: Terminology - how to build a sequence


Pass - Describe what it is
Pass Practical - Show how you do it
Merit - Explanation what it's used for
Distinction - Analyse what it means



Objective: To shoot a sequence to assess your crew's skills and responsibilities

Some of you will be pitching 

Homework: write your Crew Skills Audit, and include still photos of them doing their job

Pass - a sequence of TRIPOD MOUNTED STATIC 20-25 shots using LS, 10x CUs and MS without breaking continuity across shots (180 deg rule) allowing ACTION to flow across the frame. Include a Hook and a Twist, using naturalistic 3 point lighting. FRAME shots with appropriate framing.

Merit - use HIGH and LOW angles for meaning, a non-linear or open ended narrative, including 2 of the following Match on Action, Cut Aways, Cross cutting. Use artificial LOW KEY lighting suitable to genre

Distinction - use all the above creatively and include ALTERNATIVE techniques (such as Montage, Jump Cuts) or Narrative techniques (open ended, non-linear). Use artificial lighting across shots to express character. Use the RULE OF THIRDS and DEPTH of FIELD.

Differentiated group research tasks: 

Group 1 Task: Crew roles (use cards)

  • DOP/CAMERA OPERATOR
  • LIGHTING
  • DIRECTOR
  • SOUND TECHNICIAN
  • PRODUCER
  • EDITOR
Pass - Describe what it is/what they do/what they are responsible for 
Merit Practical - Show how you do it (by filming)
Merit - Explain why you need them to make the shoot happen
Distinction - Analyse what skills/personal and practical you need for the role & justify your choice of Crew

Group 2 Task: Mind Map using Popplet the rules for how to shoot continuity sequences


Pass - Describe how to do it
Merit Practical - Show how you do it
Merit - Explain it's purpose and write out a techniques guide with images (blog post) 
Distinction - Analyse how it is used for storytelling in HORROR OR THRILLER and justify its use.

Group 3 Task: Collect screen grab examples from the clips below that demonstrate P, M and D level production skills from the examples below.
