Assignment: Webisode Production
YouTube is a powerful tool for producers of digital media to exhibit their portfolio of work and create an audience.
In the last 10 years, this platform has seen a rise of prosumers working collaboratively to create their own content. This includes new formats such as ‘webisodes’ where aspiring filmmakers create their own low-budget stories, with input from the audience.
You will need to research into the format, looking at successful examples, niche audience, and current trends to create your own webisode. Your ultimate aim is to ensure your product has the potential to go viral with this audience.
You will then pitch your idea for your 3 minute webisode to your target audience – having decided the most successful you will then work collaboratively in groups of 3 to produce a pilot 3 episode run.

Having delivered your production to deadline, you will need to measure the success in meeting the brief by measuring viewing statistics and feedback on social networks, showing a written evaluation.

What is an Ident?

Your first task for Btec Boot Camp is to design and produce an ident for your YouTube Channel.

This will brand all of your production work, your blog, your YouTube Channel, your business cards, your showreel and will help your audience to recognise your particular style and personality of your production company. They are moving image sequences that generally run for around 10 seconds and can be a combination of live action film, animation, digital effects and include the brand logo and colours of the channel.

Here are some examples:

So what does your ident have to do?
Make notes and answer your own responses.

Where to start?
Idents are based around themes that link to the characteristics you want the audience to associate with your channel and your productions.

The themes could be around your genre preferences eg, urban, dark, colourful etc. This theme must be reflected in your style:

  • Name
  • Font & logo
  • Theme (Youth)
  • Colour palate
  • Images & graphics
  • Pace of editing
  • Choice of music

Create a mindmap using https://popplet.com

Task 1: Concept
Collect fonts www.dafont.com, and images, textures, colours and screen grabs of ideas for the narrative
Develop 2 ideas for your channel ident using annotated mood boards in https://www.thinglink.com

Discuss how you will put this together and how it will conform to the checklist of CONVENTIONS

Task 2: Pitch to the group and refine your idea
Select 1 idea to develop that you think will be the most effective.

Task 3: Production test

Task 4: Feedback
You will now need to collect and review feedback from your intended audience on the success of your branding. Develop 5 questions using survey monkey to collect feedback on what they think of:
  • What the channel ident 'says' about your output (it's personality of your brand)?
  • Who they think it is targeted at?
  • What type of productions or themes it will contain?
  • How professional is the technical quality look?
  • Overall impressions of success of this ident?

Assessment
Independently you now need to complete your final ident,
It must then be uploaded/screenshots to:

Your new Btec Media YouTube Channel - you will maintain it for the next 2 years
Your blog
Your business card
