Unit 22.1 Understand the features of single camera production (Intro and Breaking Bad)

Through looking at a different examples of single camera production you will identify and explain certain key features. It is important that you refer to examples in detail to access the higher grades.  In this first part you will look at an episode of the comedy series Spaced. It will be useful for you to refer to other single camera productions as you go along.
Title of Assignment: The Features of Single Camera Production
Introduction Task:
What is a single camera production? Generally speaking what are the advantages of single camera productions? Give examples of productions that are traditionally shot using single camera. (e.g feature films such as Django Unchained etc)- read the link below which explains this well. . .
Describe what a multi camera production is and what are the advantages of shooting some products in this way? Give examples of products that are traditionally shot using multi camera set ups. (e.g Live events such as concerts and sports, studio based shows such as Jeremy Kyle, This Morning etc)
Task 1:
Format and Genres typically shot using single camera techniques:
Create a mind map of a wide range of single camera productions including genres with examples (e.g  Comedy series- Gavin and Stacey and Spaced; Feature films- Transformers and The Dark Knight etc)
Formats are the ways in which different single camera productions are presented or packaged.
Identify the following:
What is a series (this link describes how the BBC describes different formats to prospective writers) and what is a serial or single drama? Give examples of those programmes or films that in those formats.
Explain the genre of Spaced and give examples of other programmes in the genre.
Narrative Structure:
Look at this page and try and draw the events of the Spaced episode on to the three act structure. (Include examples of rising action or interest as well as working out when you think the interesting incident and climax are. )
What narrative techniques are used in the episode. Give examples and explain their function. (flashbacks, cutaways). Can you think of other examples of flashbacks in other single camera productions? e.g I am Legend
Explain what a linear or non linear structure is. Does Spaced follow this and give examples of any films or other products that are non-linear.
Explain what open or closed ending narratives are. Give examples of other productions with open and closed endings.
Technical-
Camera: (to deal with this section well it will be important to take screen grabs) 
find examples of different camera shot sizes used in Spaced and explain their effect
this production uses a wide variety of camera positions, angles and movements to good effect. Find examples of movement such as tracking, zooms and crash zooms, interesting camera angles and positions.
Camera angles are used to describe and show different parts of the narrative/story. Explain how they do this and the benefits of using particular shots for particular purposes. e.g Extreme long shots (even filmed from a helicopter) are used for establishing shots or to set the scene.
Lighting:
Find examples of different types of lighting and explain the effect?

Find examples of the following in Spaced and other productions if necessary:
Sound:
Find examples of the different types of sound below and explain their purpose and effectiveness.
Diegetic Sound/Non Diegetic Sound– explain what this is and where it is found in the programme (diegetic- e.g dialogue; non diegetic e.g music or soundtrack only heard by the audience eg Getting to Know You; often used to add to the narrative)
Soundtrack/Songs
Incidental Music (e.g music designed to create tension)
Sound effects
Editing:
Find examples of editing techniques such as shot reverse shot; reaction shots; well edited sequences
The directing and editing in this programme is very varied. Find the montage (the sequence where they keep meeting in the cafe) and describe its effect; what are wipe transitions and why are they used?
